Target Online Survey Results

One thing is certain, just about everyone who has either taken my survey, spoken to me on the phone or talked to me in person does not want a Target on La Madrona Drive. In fact, out of everyone I have talked to, only three people want a Target on La Madrona. Everyone else either 1) does not want a Target in Scotts Valley at all, or  2) want it somewhere else.

Here is a sampling of some of the comments I have been receiving:

I don’t believe that Scotts Valley and surrounding communities can support both a Big K-Mart and a Target. If Target is built, one or both will crumble leaving a large, blighted building Structure. Most people I have spoken with enjoy shopping at Target more then K-Mart. I would have no qualms if Target were to take over the current Big K-Mart shopping center location, but will adamantly oppose any proposal to build in the La Madrona location.”

I would support a Target store in our city ONLY if it replaces K-Mart, and I do not like the proposed La Madrona Drive option. Has Scotts Valley Drive been considered? Though it would impact traffic more for me I think it makes more sense as it becomes accessible from two freeway exits. Thank you for posing this questionnaire.”

Target will destroy many small businesses in Scotts Valley, in addition to creating numerous traffic and safety issues that the current council seems to be blind to.”

"I'm enthusiastic about the Town Center project, and Target on La Madrona Drive will draw shoppers away from Town Center businesses.  Shoppers coming to Scotts Valley for Target in the proposed La Madrona Drive location will not travel deeper into Scotts Valley. Traffic into Target will absolutely ruin the wonderful quality of life that southern Scotts Valley and SLV residents enjoy."

"I would like the employment opportunities and the benefits Target can bring to the community.  I am not wedded to that location, is there a place north of Scotts Valley Dr to consider?"

If you haven't yet contacted me with your opinion, it isn't too late! I want to hear from as many people in the community as possible. Your opinion matters.

Love what you say on your website. By the way, people were talking about you on the soccer sidelines this past weekend-good things!

You have a gracious way of being present as you share your hopes and dreams. I believe people will be drawn to your leadership once they get a chance to meet you. Be who you are, and all will be well!

Here is a letter that was written to the Press Banner in

regards to their city council endorsement choices.

SV Banner.....you are too quick to endorse
written by Gene Michalak, October 25, 2008

I have had the pleasure of talking with one of the candidates running for Scotts Valley City Council at a recent fund raising event. I was very much impressed with this person's intellect, passion, command of the issues and keen analytical skills. While I do like many of the people running for this office; I was left with a feeling that this person was one of the best suited to truly represent the needs of Scotts valley residents.

I also learned that two of the most thoughtful people to have ever served in that post, both have endorsed her -- Stephany Aguilar and Cliff Barrett.

The Banner should have taken more time to get to know ALL the candidates before rushing to judgment because, in my opinion, they have just passed over a very remarkable individual.

BTW - the person that impressed me so much is Caryn Machado.

A big thank you to Gene and everyone for all of your kind words! I am honored by your trust and faith in me.

Unfortunately, money is a very real part of any candidates ability to win an election. However, it is my opinion that elections in this country have become too costly, and that all that money could be spent in much better ways. This is why I made a commitment at the beginning of my campaign to only purchase signs, postcards and flyers, and some other basic items. I have kept my expenses to a minimum and still managed to get the word out, thanks to my supporters. While I would again like to thank everyone who has donated to my campaign thus far, I am still $1,630.00 away from closing the gap between my expenses and donations. We are almost to the finish line! Change is possible, I just need you to make it happen! Can you help me close the gap and win this race? If so, please click here for information about donating to my campaign.

Thank you!

Please remember to vote on November 4th, 2008

Your Vote is Your Voice.
Vote to Preserve and Protect Scotts Valley.

“Our Goal is to provide our residents with the environment of a tranquil, verdant forest and the services of a modern, small city that reflects our history, culture and setting.” Eight years ago, these simple yet powerful words were penned into the General Plan of 1994 and called the Mission Statement of Scotts Valley.   Our city leaders at the time had the foresight to help guide those of us who would lead in the future.  I want to honor their vision by going back to this Mission Statement when considering all future developments.  We must remember that the decisions we make now will affect the landscape of Scotts Valley forever. We have unique opportunities before us and must choose wisely. Our children deserve nothing less.
