Welcome to carynmachado.com, the official website of Caryn Machado for Scotts Valley City Council 2008!
About me...
I was born in 1967, the eldest of 3 siblings. My brother and I grew up in the Central Valley under the strict but loving guidance of our mother. My sister was born much later and raised on the East Coast by my stepmother and father. My son attends Scotts Valley Middle School, where I am a member of the P.T.A., and my husband owns Luis Moro Chocolate. My husband and I are also members of HAND.

I attended Fresno State in the late 1980's and graduated from Fresno State University with a degree in Theatre Arts in 1990. I moved to the Bay area in 1991, and bought a house in Scotts Valley with my family in 1994. Finding that I loved theatre but it didn't pay the bills, I worked as a Manager of a local salon for several years, then my foray into the mortgage business/real estate started in 1997 thanks to a call from my former boss at Prima. I worked my way up from Loan Processor to Underwriter, then as a Notary Public at a local title company. During the past 10 years I gained a deep understanding of how the industry worked and of property issues unique to Santa Cruz county.

Living in this area for 14+ years (and especially leaving it from time to time) made me realize how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place, and how important it is to preserve it for future generations*.

One day I found myself driving around Scotts Valley and looked around, marveling at not only what we had, but also what we could have, and, what could be lost. Naturally (being so fond of our city) I decided right then and there that I was going to do what I could to help steer Scotts Valley in the right direction by keeping in mind the Mission Statement (as stated in the General Plan of Scotts Valley) of
"Our goal is to provide our residents with the environment of a tranquil, verdant forest, and the services of a modern small city that reflects our history, culture and setting". I want to remind our City Government of this statement when considering all future developments, and to help the citizens and city government of Scotts Valley find the balance between protecting our open spaces and fostering responsible, sustainable, growth to ensure that our city is financially stable.

P.S. I've dedicated this campaign to my father, Marshall Machado, who gave me the best advice I have ever gotten: "Never over-promise and under-deliver." When elected I promise to always heed these sage words.

* Read below to learn about a year in my life which changed me and my outlook towards the environment and our world forever.

It was 1985, my very first year in college. California State University, Fresno was offering a program called "Man and the Natural Environment" or "MNE" for short. (Which was later changed to the more politically correct "MWNE".) Our tight-knit group of 20+ students and 3+ professors traveled together in two large vans around the state for 2 weeks at a time, camping at night and holding classes during the day in the great outdoors. We traveled all over the West, from diverse places such as Red Rock Canyon in Utah to the desert of Death Valley, where a class assignment sent us on a solo night-time walk under the starry desert sky to ponder our lives, nature in general and where we all fit in. Talk about a walk to remember! This is just one example of the unique lessons we participated in during those weeks out on the road.
It was in this capacity that I first became acutely aware of the human effect on the world around us. We learned history, geology, biology and archaeology, sometimes all in one place. These were lessons that I will never forget, and I have carried them with me throughout my life, becoming who I am today.

We must always remember that we are all a part of a very complex web, and that we must take care of our earth, as it is what sustains all life as we know it.

Having recently watched the film "The 11th Hour", I was quite moved by what a Biologist, Peter Marshall, had to say.
"There are two things that can perhaps save the world. One would be the mastery of ones kindness to oneself and a big heart, and the other would be understanding your passion for place, for where you live, and really loving the place you live in."

Let's keep Scotts Valley beautiful for future generations.

P.S.  While you are at the voting booth, I encourage you to vote Yes on Prop 2. It is a modest step towards providing more humane conditions for our farm animals.
